In 2012, consumers spent more than $1 trillion online shopping and buying goods and services.
I worked on one of the first ecommerce shopping projects ever called En Passant, which morphed to 2Market, which then became a big part of AOL's shopping channel. We launched En Passant back in 1991 along with Apple, Dow Jones, and EDS.
Back then, bandwidth was the key issue facing us all. It was tough to deliver graphics, videos and information at 1200, 2400 and 9600 baud. We had to rely on CD-ROMs to package up the info with very rudimentary online ordering features. And consumers were scared to death to put their credit card information online.
We have come a long way as an industry! See this article in "Mashable" about the industry reaching this milestone.
