Laps for Lexi

During a recent Junior Achievement awards ceremony, I was introduced to Davis Gestiehr, a courageous 13-year-old from Bethesda. I recognized him since he had performed the national anthem at a few Wizards games. I didn’t know him beyond being a talented young singer, but what I learned was truly moving.

Davis sent me an email after watching John Wall become emotional during his postgame interview following the Wizards’ incredible double-overtime victory against Boston. That was the day John received the sad news that he lost his young friend Miyah to cancer. Watching John struggle with his emotions brought tears to Davis’ eyes. He empathized because he lost his best friend, Lexi Speight, to cancer five years ago.

Since her death, Davis and his sister, Madison, have been writing and performing songs for her charity, Laps for Lexi, an annual 5k run that is held in Lexi’s honor. Watch this video as it tells an amazing story.

In November the Davison Duo recorded a new song, Forever and Always, and released it on iTunes. All net proceeds go toward the Pediatric Oncology at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. If you wish to purchase the song and support the cause alongside this special family, click here.
