The Wizards made a trade to add a talented big man to our roster Friday night - and
will contribute right away to our team. It was important to our franchise to enter this season at full strength and to have depth and show upside and improvement. The addition of a center to our lineup allows for all of our players now to play their natural and most comfortable positions and it makes us a bigger and more mobile team. The trade also will create additional matchup issues for opponents in the East. And we got even younger in the process as Gortat is 2 years younger than the key player involved in the trade.
We have added a very unique talent now to our mix. Gortat is long, and can run and is experienced. He runs the floor very well, is tough, is a very good rebounder and shoots well with both hands.
Here is a clip
of a highlight reel for you to see his talents.

Gortat is in the last year of his contract as was Emeka Okafor, who we traded. I would like to thank Emeka for his contributions to our team. I hope he recovers from his injury and resumes his career as a productive NBA player. He is a class act as a player and a person. I respect him very much.
We traded a protected first round pick to get the deal done. We have many young players on our team today and we believed that using our conditional pick to get the deal done was the prudent move for our franchise at this time in its development. Of our 15 players under contract, eight players have been drafted by us in the first or second round in the last four off-seasons. We are a very young team still.
We have noted that we would use the draft, first and foremost, to rebuild our team and make trades to bring on vets such as Trevor Ariza, Nene, and now Gortat - or free agency such as Martell Webster, Eric Maynor and Al Harrington. We dipped into the D league for Garrett Temple.
Let us all welcome Marcin Gortat to Washington. D.C., as we look forward to the start of our new season this next week.
